In its letter to the FDA, the company cited "an abundance of data from studies indicating that sildenafil significantly improves erectile function in men with coronary artery disease."
Pfizer, which makes Cialis, has been trying to develop new versions of sildenafil in response to growing concerns about the safety of the drug, Zook said.
Pfizer's new version is called Revatio, which contains the same active ingredient as Viagra but comes in a lower dose and is taken once daily.
Patients will still be able to get their prescription to use the medication, the company said.

"We believe that the new version will be more effective than the branded product and that it will be less likely to cause serious adverse events," said Dr. John R. Smith, the company's director of worldwide drug development.
